We’re at the end of our series on how to conduct more meaningful safety leadership walkthroughs. But before we bring this series to a close, I want to leave you with a tool that we use for conducting safety-leadership walkthroughs and that may be helpful to you as well. This tool will help you ensure you are making the most of your time during your walkthroughs. [content_protector password=”tool-10″ identifier=”tool-10″]
Now, the tool is simply a form that you can use to prepare for your own safety-leadership walkthroughs to add purpose and structure to those walkthroughs. The tool is divided into several sections. The first section prompts you to identify the safety-critical tasks you may encounter during your walkthrough. You can use this section to identify your areas of focus and to sketch out a game plan.
That section is followed by a second section that prompts you to identify potential hazards with those tasks, and any areas of special concern (such as whether this is a new procedure, or whether it’s being done by new employees who may be unfamiliar with the procedure). It also prompts you to identify recommended controls and recommended precautions that the operators or technicians may need to take.
The third section prompts you to think through the questions you’d like to ask about the job while you’re out on the floor or on the job site, and to identify just who you plan to engage with those questions, and what you hope to accomplish by asking those questions.
The final section prompts you to think through the process again to see if there is anything you missed as a leader to ensure process-safety integrity.
Well, that’s the tool in a nutshell. You can download it directly below the video. Feel free to use it for your own safety-leadership walkthroughs.
That’s it for this edition of Recordable INSIGHTS. See you next time.
